West Slope Counties Go Libertarian
Montrose- The
Libertarian message of smaller, more accountable government is alive and growing
in western Colorado as two more Libertarian groups form in Delta and Gunnison
Counties this month.
The Delta
County Libertarians will kick off with a July 15th event from 5 to 9 pm,
at the Pavilion at Cleland park in Delta. Delta County Commissioner
candidates, Democrat John Hanning and Republican Dan Stucker, will speak
and answer questions at the event.
Gunnison County
Libertarians will host their first monthly Liberty Social on July 17 from 3 to
5 pm at Katie's Cookery, 112 S. Main, in Gunnison.
Tim Sauer,
organizer of the Gunnison meetings, stated, "It's time we had a group
dedicated to maintaining our liberties and watching our wallets. We need
the defenders of capitalism, the free-market, and individual and property
rights to band together in Gunnison to be heard."
"Libertarians encourage you to stand up and be counted as actual people
and citizens," said Debby Schum, organizer of the Delta County
Libertarians. "Come hear the freedom candidates speak, meet liberty
minded people, and take part in your community."
These are
opportunities for Libertarians and other freedom minded individuals to meet
new friends and to make a difference. These are chances for people, who
believe political change starts at home, at the grass roots level, to network
with others who are willing to work hard to effect change locally.
The Western
Slope Libertarian Party (WSLP) based in Montrose County, in it's fourth year
of active participation in local affairs, has been encouraging it's neighbors
to join the fight for protection and restoration of property rights,
individual responsibility, less government intrusion, and all other freedoms.
"It is
very encouraging to see our neighbors become more active in their
communities," stated Mike Humbert, WSLP Chairman. "There
are many who actively work to control every aspect of our lives and it is
vital that there be groups to vigilantly counter such efforts to relieve us of
freedom and responsibility."

The
WSLP Proudly Supported JoJo
Ping for City
Council At Large
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
At a meeting held January 13 in Montrose, Mike Humbert of Montrose
was elected to his second term as chairman of the Western Slope Libertarian
Party.
Humbert said he was honored to serve
another term as WSLP chairman. He
is joined on the 2004 WSLP Board of Directors by Vice Chairman Joe Trainor,
a natural gas worker of Montrose; Secretary Susie Adamson, a farmer of
Montrose; and, Treasurer JoJo Ping, a restaurateur living and doing business
in Montrose.
"I am proud that the WSLP worked hard
in 2003 to save taxpayers money
through our initiative aimed at exempting grocery items from City of
Montrose sales tax," Humbert said. "Although our initiative did not
pass, I
believe we gained substantial support amongst the county residents, who are
not allowed to vote on such matters that affect them."
Humbert said he would try to raise the
WSLP's public profile in 2004 by
"establishing permanent annual fun events" and emphasizing growth in
membership, media relations and public outreach.
"It is my hope that the WSLP will
remain a committed group of
individuals working towards a better tomorrow," Humbert said.
WSLP Treasurer JoJo Ping, who owns JoJo's
Windmill Restaurant, is
planning a run for Montrose City Council in 2004. She will be emphasizing the
following issues: more leadership from the council in regards to the city
manager & city planning. More in-depth study on requested budget
items, and more input from long time city employees.
For more information, contact Humbert at
970-252-8750 or Ping at
970-240-8678, or go to the WSLP web site at www.westernslopelp.org.
Media
interviews are available.
